Season 1 Episode 6 - Tricks of the Trade

Mike and Harvey collaborate to provide legal defense for a woman they believe has been unjustly charged with engaging in insider trading. Simultaneously, Mike faces the challenge of concealing his secret from Rachel as he offers to assist her in preparing for her law school entrance exam.

Harvey Specter engages in negotiations at the Department of Justice's office with Becky, a judge he knows from his previous job, regarding his clients Burt Kimball and Dean Morello, as well as the accused employee Gabby Stone, who is suspected of insider trading. They work towards a deal that will clear Harvey's clients, with Gabby having to agree to certain terms.

Harvey allows Mike Ross to observe the meeting with the client and DOJ representatives, cautioning him to keep a low profile.

In the conference room, the details of the case unfold. Gabby Stone, a trader at Harvey's clients' company, allegedly made a significant stock purchase before FDA approval, resulting in a substantial profit. While Harvey's clients deny involvement, Gabby and her lawyer claim that the trade was based on information provided by Harvey's clients. Harvey presents Gabby with a deal from the DOJ, reducing her prison sentence to 11 months, and she eventually agrees to sign.

After Morello and Kimball leave, Gabby's attorney requests a moment alone to review the papers, leaving Mike to watch over Gabby. She expresses her shattered plans for the future and her emotional distress due to the conviction. Mike steps out to get her a glass of water but gets engrossed in a conversation with Rachel about her friend Theresa, a former paralegal at the firm. Mike grows nervous when he discovers that Gabby has escaped.

Harvey and Mike visit Morello and Mike carefully observes Gabby's colleagues. Later, Mike learns that Morello's traders gather at a specific bar and infiltrate their group by pretending to be an old acquaintances, enticing them to share details of their successful trades. Through this, he uncovers possible fraudulent activities, which he shares with Harvey. In the end, Gabby is exonerated thanks to their efforts.

Meanwhile, Mike encounters Theresa, whom he previously took the LSAT for, at Pearson Hardman. Rachel reveals that Theresa used to work as a paralegal at the firm before attending Harvard Law School and applying for a job there. Theresa ultimately doesn't get the job, but she confesses to Rachel that she cheated on her LSAT. As passing the exam is crucial for Rachel's legal career aspirations, she asks Theresa to connect her with the person who took the test for her. Mike receives a call from their mutual contact Oliver regarding Rachel's request, and he agrees to help. However, when they meet, Mike convinces Rachel not to take shortcuts.

Later, Rachel expresses gratitude to Mike for assisting her with LSAT preparation and informs him that she will take the exam legitimately next time, a decision Mike supports. However, Rachel becomes suspicious of Mike's sudden change of heart and realizes that he is the "test genius" who cheats for others. She confronts Mike and asks him to confess, which he does.

In the end, Mike and Harvey find themselves entangled in the case involving Gabby Stone, where they uncover the involvement of Burt Kimball, Morello's second-in-command, in illegal trading practices. Kimball implicates Gabby to protect himself but is subsequently fired by Morello, and Gabby is released from prison with the assistance of Mike and Harvey.
