Season 1 Episode 9 - Undefeated
In this episode, Harvey faces a formidable opponent, Travis Tanner, an undefeated lawyer from the Clyde-MacPhee law firm in Boston. Tanner is brought in to help Emerson Petroleum win its lawsuit against the firm. He taunts Harvey by referencing a shoulder injury that prevented him from playing in a high school baseball championship. Meanwhile, within Pearson Hardman, a leak of a confidential witness list leads to suspicions of a mutiny, and Mike takes it upon himself to uncover the culprit while also assisting Harvey.
While the courtroom battle takes center stage, there is an underlying plot of a potential rebellion within Pearson Hardman. An associate leaks the witness list to rival firm Wakefield-Cady, prompting Mike to investigate. The scene between Mike and the IT guy, Benjamin, showcases Mike's eidetic memory as he discovers that Rachel was framed by a first-year associate named Jimmy. Mike's revelation leaves Benjamin shocked. It's a small victory for Mike in this game of detective work.
One notable moment occurs when Harvey instructs Mike to dig up information on Travis Tanner, intending to use it against him, similar to how Tanner used Harvey's high school injury against him. Harvey claims that basketball legend Michael Jordan watched more game films than anyone else, challenging Mike to call Jordan. To Mike's surprise, Harvey's claim is confirmed when he hears Jordan's voice on the other end of the line.
There's a touch of James Bond in Harvey's conversation with his private investigator, Vanessa, which may elicit an eye-roll. However, Harvey's smooth talk and ability to win people over parallel the infamous British spy.
In the end, Harvey outwits Tanner with some advice from Mike and secures victory in the case against Emerson Petroleum. Despite his success, Harvey learns that the firm won't cover the one million dollars he spent out of his own pocket to buy extra time for the case. Nevertheless, it's expected that Harvey will easily make the money back--he's Harvey Specter.
Additionally, Mike discovers that Jimmy is responsible for the leak and framing Rachel. Jimmy leaked the list in the hopes of securing a junior partnership with Wakefield-Cady, but the firm reneged on their offer, leaving Jimmy feeling angry and deceived. The episode highlights the importance of working hard and earning rewards through legitimate means.
In summary, Harvey faces a formidable opponent, Travis Tanner, while Mike uncovers the truth behind the leak and helps defend Rachel against accusations of treason within Pearson Hardman.
