Season 1 Episode 2 - Errors and Omissions
Episode 2 of Suits' first season, titled "Errors and Omissions," delves deeper into the intriguing world of high-stakes law and the fascinating dynamics between the show's central characters, Mike Ross and Harvey Specter.
Mike is playing air hockey with Wyatt, a client, and has lost four consecutive games. Harvey approaches them and informs Wyatt that investors have arrived, urging him to prepare for a meeting in the conference room. Wyatt initially panics when he can't find the $20 million prototype for a satellite phone he developed, but Harvey calmly retrieves it from Wyatt's pocket.
As the investors arrive, they head towards the conference room, and Harvey briefs Wyatt on what to say. Mike tries to follow them, but Harvey denies him access, stating that Mike hasn't earned the privilege yet, and asks him to return to the office and file a patent for the prototype. Mike seeks Rachel's help at Pearson Hardman, but she rejects him. In the break room, Mike meets Gregory Boone, who offers to assist with filing the patent claim.
Rachel visits Mike's cubicle, but he makes her wait in return for her lack of help. Mike informs Rachel about his agreement with Gregory to file the claim and proofread the Bainbridge briefs in return. Rachel discloses that Gregory gave her a key card to the print room and called Mike a "sucker." In the print room, Mike realizes the Bainbridge briefs are extensive, confirming Gregory's remark.
The next day, Mike informs Harvey that he spent the night proofreading the briefs. Harvey becomes concerned about the pending patent claim and questions Mike's hesitation. Mike lies, claiming the claim is on his desk, but discovers that Gregory hasn't filed it yet. Frustrated, Mike rushes to finish the proofreading. Louis questions Mike's involvement, and Mike lies about volunteering for the task, unaware that Louis knows the truth. Louis advises Mike to seek Harvey's assistance next time and gives him the patent claim to file. Mike thanks Louis and rushes to deliver the claim to Harvey.
Later, Louis commends Mike's work on the briefs and offers him a special position. He invites Mike to lunch at the tennis club, but Mike declines due to his responsibilities. Louis calls Gregory to file the interference claim instead. At the club, Louis tries to connect with another attendee, Tom Keller, but fails. Louis suggests Mike may have better luck due to his youth and asks if he has ever smoked pot. Mike denies it, but Louis reveals Mike's failed drug test and asks him to smoke pot with Tom to secure his business.
Mike returns to Pearson Hardman after smoking pot with Tom and encounters Jessica in the elevator. She asks about his experience working with Harvey, and Mike responds nervously but positively. In his cubicle, Mike receives a call from the Patent Office and speaks agitatedly. Louis interrupts the call and ends it, reminding Mike that he also works for him. Louis assigns Gregory to file the interference claim in Mike's place.
Harvey negotiates with the opposing company regarding the patent issue while facing challenges in court. Pearl, the judge, treats Harvey poorly and reveals his resentment due to an alleged affair with Lauren, Pearl's wife. Harvey confronts Pearl, who demands a confession in exchange for granting the injunction.
Meanwhile, Mike discusses the incident at the tennis club with Harvey, blaming himself. Rachel advises Mike to inform Harvey about Louis' blackmail. Harvey declines, still upset that Mike followed Louis' orders. Mike pleads for trust and offers to work for free. Inspired, Harvey comes up with a plan to resolve the patent problem and asks Donna to reschedule his appointments. Harvey meets Wyatt and proposes releasing the specifications online instead of settling, putting Wyatt's name in the spotlight.
Harvey confronts Pearl, threatening to expose his unethical behavior. He reveals that he never slept with Lauren but warns Pearl of the potential consequences if he doesn't cooperate. Wyatt expresses concerns about the settlement, but Harvey assures him it's the best option. Ultimately, Harvey's strategy succeeds, and they win the case.
Outside the courthouse, Mike asks Harvey about the events that transpired, but Harvey doesn't respond and calls Donna to clear his schedule. He instructs Mike to return to Pearson Hardman and file an interference claim with the Patent Office to improve their chances. Harvey then visits an art gallery where he confronts Lauren, the judge's wife, about her false claim of an affair. He reminds her that he rejected her advances and questions why she lied. Lauren remains unsympathetic and reveals that her husband paid more attention to her when he believed she had cheated.
Back at Pearson Hardman, Mike is on an agitated phone call with the Patent Office, surrounded by papers on his desk. Louis interrupts and reminds Mike of their scheduled lunch, but Mike explains the importance of his task for Harvey. Louis disregards Mike's explanation and ends his call, asserting his authority. When Mike emphasizes the significance of filing the interference claim, Louis summons Gregory and assigns him the task, much to Gregory's annoyance.
At the tennis club, Louis easily defeats Mike in a game and tries to strike up a conversation with Tom Keller, who runs a fantasy football site. However, Tom shows little interest. Louis comments on Tom's choice of legal counsel and suggests they take a shower.
Harvey visits Pearl once more and confronts him in his office, despite objections from Pearl's assistant. Harvey threatens to sue Pearl and overturn his verdict if he doesn't comply with the injunction. Pearl reveals his decision to leave the bench and divorce his wife due to her affair with Harvey. Pearl proposes a deal: he will grant Harvey the injunction if Harvey admits to sleeping with his wife, preventing her from claiming his assets in the divorce.
During the drive back to Pearson Hardman, Wyatt calls Harvey, expressing his nervousness about their deal. Harvey reminds Wyatt of similar instances in the past and abruptly ends the call, disregarding Wyatt's protests.
At the tennis club, Mike and Louis change clothes. Louis laments his inability to connect with Tom and attributes it to not appearing "cool" because he doesn't smoke pot. He suggests that Mike, being younger, might have better luck and asks if Mike has ever used marijuana.
Mike denies it, but Louis reveals Mike's failed drug test and hands him a copy. Louis then pressures Mike to smoke pot with Tom to secure his business, warning him of the consequences of refusal. As Louis goes to shower, Tom arrives and expresses his discomfort with Louis. Mike compliments Tom's site and impresses him with his knowledge of the game. Tom commends Mike's team selection, unaware that Mike had been high before the draft.
Returning to Pearson Hardman after getting high with Tom, Mike encounters Jessica in the elevator. She asks about his experience working with Harvey, and Mike nervously replies that he is learning a lot. Back at his cubicle, Gregory approaches Mike and gives him the interference claim he filed on Mike's behalf. Mike promptly delivers the claim to Harvey's office, interrupting Harvey's phone call with Wyatt. Harvey scolds him for the interruption and comments on Mike's flushed appearance. Realizing that Mike is high, Harvey tells him to leave his office.
Mike is washing his face in the restroom when Rachel unexpectedly appears. Mike questions her presence, but Rachel informs him that he mistakenly entered the ladies' room. She asks about his appearance, but Mike quickly leaves, stating that he needs some fresh air.
Outside Pearson Hardman, Mike confides in Rachel about what transpired with Tom Keller at the tennis club. He blames himself for letting Harvey down, but Rachel disagrees, suggesting that Harvey is the one who disappointed Mike. She encourages Mike to confront Harvey about what happened.
Harvey is on a phone call with Velocity's counsel, the firm that filed a competing patent claim. He rejects their initial low settlement offer, confident that the verdict on his injunction will be overturned. After some negotiation, they increase their offer to $20 million, matching the prototype's cost.
The following day, Mike visits Harvey in his office and recounts the events at the tennis club, including Louis' blackmail using Mike's failed drug test. Harvey, still upset that Mike followed Louis' instructions instead of his own, emphasizes that Mike should come to him in such situations. Mike argues that he did approach Harvey regarding filing the patent claim and expects some loyalty in return.
However, Harvey counters by mentioning how he took the blame with Wyatt and suggests that loyalty must be earned. Mike pleads with Harvey to trust him, even offering to work for free. This sparks an idea in Harvey's mind to address the patent issue, and he asks Donna to inform Wyatt that he's coming to see him. Donna then notifies Mike that Jessica wants to meet him in her office.
In Jessica's office, she congratulates Mike on acquiring his first client, Tom Keller, and notes that he reminds her of Harvey. Louis enters with Tom, discussing concerns Tom has about the retainer. Tom downplays the issues, but Louis insists on addressing them.
While Jessica and Louis discuss the concerns, Mike approaches Tom and questions why he chose to work with Louis, considering Tom's previous discomfort around him. Tom replies that a little deviousness is desirable in a good lawyer and insists that Mike be his point person. Mike expresses gratitude, mentioning that Jessica wouldn't have noticed him without Tom's intervention since Louis wouldn't have disclosed his role in landing Tom as a client. Tom sees potential in the three of them working together, but Mike proposes another idea.
Harvey discusses the $20 million settlement offer with Wyatt, who is hesitant about accepting it. Harvey advises Wyatt to tell them to reject the offer outright. They meet with the opposing company and reveal their plan to release the satellite phone specifications for free on the internet in 48 hours instead of engaging in a court battle. The opposing lawyer threatens to file an injunction, but Harvey explains that by the time they do, the specifications will already be online, giving Wyatt credit for the design, which is more valuable than the settlement offer.
Harvey visits Judge Pearl and informs him about an investigation into Pearl's attempted blackmail, suggesting that if Pearl tried it with Harvey, he likely did it before. Harvey reveals that he never slept with Lauren, despite Pearl's assumptions, but now that they are getting divorced, she is free to date anyone, including Harvey.
Back at Pearson Hardman, Harvey visits Mike in the file room and asks him to prepare a settlement memorandum for the case with Wyatt, stating that the opposing company agreed to settle for $400 million. He also hands Mike the genuine drug test results, proving that Mike passed, and exposing Louis for using a fake test to blackmail him. Harvey plans to confront Louis, but Mike convinces him to let Mike handle it. Mike confronts Louis with the real test results and admonishes him for his blackmail.
Louis remains unsympathetic, citing that because of his actions, Jessica now knows Mike's name, and they secured a significant new client for the firm. Mike acknowledges the outcome but asserts his intention to inform Jessica about Louis' actions. Louis tries to make Mike take another drug test, knowing he will fail, but Mike informs him that according to Pearson Hardman's drug policy, Louis must wait three months before requesting another test. As Mike leaves, he reveals that he spoke to Tom Keller and convinced him that working with Mike and Harvey is a better choice than with Louis, leaving Louis stunned.
