Suits Season 2 Episode 4 - Discovery
Travis Tanner returns to town with the intention of targeting Harvey by resurrecting an old lawsuit. Meanwhile, Louis and Mike team up on a case. In the process, Donna manages to find the missing document.
Harvey loans Mike to Louis for a case, even though he had previously made fun of Louis's record. Louis is representing Liquid Water, which is being sued by Durham Foods for claiming that their water increases IQ. Meanwhile, Harvey asks Donna for assistance in reviewing files for a case he handled four years ago, which is being reopened due to new evidence. Mike pleads with Harvey to let him work on the case as well. While Mike and Donna are in the files room, Harold enters looking for a stapler for Rachel. Donna quickly adjusts her appearance and loosens Mike's tie to create the impression that they were engaged in a sexual encounter. Harold is flustered and doesn't notice the files they were going through.
Louis decides not to settle with Durham Foods and instead plans to overwhelm them with paperwork. Harold delivers office supplies to Rachel, but she insists that he shouldn't be assisting her as it's her job to help him. She takes the stapler he brought her and tosses it in a drawer full of staplers.
Harvey visits a woman who used to work for Coastal Motors and knew about faulty machinery. She tells him to leave her property and threatens to report him for fraud if he exposes the faulty machinery.
Travis Tanner confronts Harvey outside the woman's house and threatens to report him to the Bar for fraud now that he knows about the faulty machinery.
Louis and Mike interview Kevin, the Vice-President of Market Research for Durham Foods, and his lawyer. Louis establishes a connection with Kevin and gets him to admit that the lawsuit against Liquid Water is motivated by Durham Foods' declining shares.
Harvey confronts Lawrence Kemp in the parking lot, accusing him of concealing information about Sarah Layton and making him feel guilty for the man's death in the original case. Mike expresses his enjoyment of working with Louis and points out that Louis poisoned their relationship himself by trying to sabotage Mike's relationship with Jenny and blackmailing him with a fake drug test.
Louis is waiting in Harvey's office when Harvey and Mike enter. Louis offers to help Harvey if he trusts him, but Harvey tells him to leave. Mike suggests that Harvey is being too harsh and that Louis only wants to be like him. Lawrence Kemp calls Harvey and advises him to settle, and Harvey asks about Donna. Mike reveals that Donna is in the file room, leading Harvey to realize the document is missing. The camera reveals that Louis left his audio recorder under a sheet of paper in Harvey's office.
Harvey meets Travis Tanner and admits that the document would not have stood up in court because he forged it. Tanner reveals that he wanted to get revenge on Coastal Motors and Harvey. Meanwhile, Louis listens to the recording of Harvey and Mike's conversation and appears upset. Daniel Pierce asks Louis if he has anything to say, but Louis remains silent. Harvey informs Jessica that they are still being sued for fraud. Daniel storms in and demands to know why they didn't inform him about the lawsuit. Donna discovers the document that Harvey is being sued for, and it has her signature confirming its receipt.
Harvey receives a letter from Smith & Devane, a rival law firm, informing him that they are reopening a case he settled four years ago due to new evidence. Harvey meets with the attorney from Smith & Devane, who turns out to be Travis Tanner, now their senior partner. Tanner reveals that a confidential memo has been found that exposes Coastal Motors' fraud and implicates Harvey in the fraud as he failed to disclose it.
Despite Harvey temporarily assigning Mike to work with Louis, their partnership becomes strained after Mike insults Harvey's taste in music. However, with Coastal Motors firing Harvey and the discovery of the memo, Mike is forced to secretly help Harvey while still fulfilling his obligations to Louis. Louis starts to suspect that Harvey is hiding something, but when confronted, Mike lies and denies any knowledge.
After meeting with Lawrence Kemp, Harvey secured a $46 million settlement that Smith & Devane wanted. However, Smith & Devane is still pursuing Pearson Hardman for fraud. Tanner reveals that he knows about Harvey's recent investigation for burying evidence and doubts anyone will believe Harvey's claim of never seeing the memo before. Harvey instructs Donna to find the memo in the file room but begins to doubt its existence. Confident in his stance, Harvey prepares to face Tanner in court.
Louis enters Harvey's office and inquires about his situation, but Harvey dismissively tells him to leave. Louis accidentally leaves his dictaphone behind, which records Harvey insulting him and discussing the firm's fraud lawsuit. Louis shares the information with Daniel Hardman, who confronts Harvey and Jessica for keeping him out of the loop. Despite their lack of trust, Hardman offers his assistance in defending the firm, and Jessica agrees.
Louis and Hardman approve Mike's proposal for Liquid Water to acquire their bankrupt competitor. Louis gives credit to Mike but makes it clear that he doesn't want to owe him anything, abruptly ending their budding bond.
In the file room, Donna stumbles upon the confidential memo, stamped with her own date from 2008, causing her great distress.
