Gregory Tricked Mike Into Proofreading The Bainbridge Briefs
At Pearson Hardman, Mike visits Rachel seeking her assistance in filing a patent, but she denies him access to her office. In the break room, Mike encounters Gregory Boone, who discloses his knowledge of filing a patent claim, sparking an idea in Mike's mind.
Later, Rachel approaches Mike's workspace, but he makes her wait in return for her lack of support with the patent claim. Mike reveals that he struck a deal with Gregory to handle the claim, but in exchange, he must proofread the Bainbridge briefs for him. Rachel, with a slight smile, informs Mike that Gregory labeled him "a sucker" and had asked her to give him a key card to the Pearson Hardman print room. Curious, Mike enters the print room only to discover that the Bainbridge briefs consist of thousands of pages, confirming Gregory's assessment.
The following day, Mike updates his superior, Harvey, that he spent the entire night proofreading the Bainbridge briefs. Harvey expresses concern over the delay in receiving confirmation of the patent claim for the prototype, emphasizing its criticality to their agreement. Mike lies to Harvey, claiming that the claim is on his desk. He then visits Gregory, only to find out that the claim hasn't been filed yet, much to Mike's frustration. Gregory insists that the claim will be filed only after Mike finishes proofreading the briefs, refusing to budge despite its significance.
With urgency, Mike races to complete his task but is approached by Louis, who questions why he's doing Gregory's job. Mike fabricates a story, stating that he volunteered to take over and implies that Gregory didn't want him to. However, Louis reveals his knowledge of the situation, commending Mike for his loyalty to his colleague. Louis wonders why Mike didn't seek Harvey's help with the claim and offers his assistance, handing over the patent claim that should have been filed. Grateful for Louis' support, Mike hurries to deliver the claim to Harvey's office.
Returning to his cubicle, Mike encounters Harvey already present, who promptly informs him that their patent application has been rejected due to a prior claim made by someone else. Harvey, aware of Mike's deceit regarding the filing of the claim, confronts him and Mike attempts to defend himself by stating that he had previously admitted his lack of knowledge in filing such claims. Harvey counters by highlighting that Mike had lied about filing the claim, and proposes the idea of contacting the Patent Office to uncover the identity of the other claimant. He suggests pursuing an injunction to prevent their competitor from launching their product ahead of them.
